Royal Flying Doctor Service

ROYAL FLYING DOCTOR SERVICE is an eye-opening and dramatic observational documentary series following the daily working lives of the RFDS personnel and the patients they treat. Based in the iconic and rugged outback town of Broken Hill we follow the stories of the emergencies called in to base which fan out across a vast expanse of outback.

The RFDS is the first, largest and the most comprehensive aeromedical organisation in the world. They bring an extensive 24-hour emergency service and primary healthcare network to those who live, work and travel throughout regional Australia and the outback.

Dedicated doctors, nurses and pilots, many long serving members of the RDFS, make up the spine of our series. They are passionate about their work and their patients. The series delivers a candid look at the heroic nature of their everyday jobs.

The stories cover a variety of medical issues and outcomes. From life-or-death struggles to save crash victims, to a race to safely deliver a baby, the series brings real-life drama from the outback to the screen. But as well as this, the series brings moments poignancy and humour, character and spirit from these admirable Australian men and women.

The stories of struggle and survival play out against the spectacular backdrop of our unique outback, currently suffering the worst drought in 100 years. Stories of personal devastation, salvation and hope are inevitable as we explore the world of the RFDS and the patients and love ones they encounter.

RFDS was produced by Granada for Nine Network and can also be seen on Foxtel.
